History of our gymnasium

In 1856, according to the wishes of Emperor Alexander II, girls’ schools with a secondary-school course of studies were started in Russia. The head of the Nobiliary Assembly of the Kharkiv Province began collecting money for the building of the Girls’ College. In 1859 steps were taken to make the Girls’ College in Kharkiv a reality. At first a private building was rented. In 1860 the college was opened. The Girls’ School was named Mariinsky, in honour of the Empress of Russia Maria Alexandrovna six years later, in 1866; Kharkiv’s City Assembly gave an empty piece of land to the College so it could build its own building.
